Political PR

September 1, 2008

I just finished watching a McCain campaign spokesman (read: PR person) get blasted on CNN, I was watching CNN out of curiosity on how the different networks were covering both the GNC and Hurricane Gustav.

CNN’s Campbell Brown was letting this guy have it over VP nominee Palin’s foreign relations experience, or as she saw lack thereof. Now, I am not declaring for or against anybody here – this is not the place.

However, did McCain’s people not see this question coming, seriously. They have spent a lot of time recently declaring that Obama is not fit to be president because of his lack of experience. How do they not have a comeback when asked how she is different?

Lack of planning (no forward thinking) or just the wrong guy for the job?

On a side note – the reason I was watching CNN; CNN, FOX news and MSNBC all seem to be devoting the same amount of time to the GNC, roughly not even close to the amount of time devoted to Hurricane Gustav.

UPDATE

The McCain’s spokespersons name is Tucker Bounds and here is the appearance on CNN.

Vacation Video

August 31, 2008

My family went on vacation to Memphis right before school started back up, we visited
Graceland and everybody loved it. Something I discovered about a year ago, Windows Movie Maker is perfect for sharing pictures with family and friends. And I get to play with Movie Maker instead of homework. I’m calling it practice in social media, my husband is calling it stop playing and do your homework!

Membership Drive

August 28, 2008

Today we are having a membership drive for the Public Relations Student Society at Cameron University. Sadly, we are not affiliated with the national association. BUT we are working on it. Our fall membership drive is today, it’s not even a real meeting. We have a lot of interest, so I can’t wait to see how many people actually show up. This is our 2nd year as an organization and so far it looks like a great year!

New class

August 23, 2008

At CU, this semester the PR professor is offering a new class. I waited the first week to talk about it just to make sure it seemed as good on Friday as it did on Monday. It is still great and I am going to get so much out of this class. The title of the class is PR Strategies, it covers so many things that you would need to know how to do. To name a few things we are going to be doing: event planning, media kits, he has even set it up with the RTV professors for us to do a mock press conference. It is going to be a great class. I am really hoping that the powers that be decide to make this class part of the normal offerings instead of just a one-time thing.

My picture

August 22, 2008

The gorgeous beach shot at the top of my page is one of my best shots of the summer.

I am lucky enough to have been born and raised in FL, we moved to OK because the Army made us. My parents and the rest of my family still live in FL, I spent several weeks there this summer. A lot of that time was spent at the beach. So, now I have a lot of pictures of sand, shells, water and sunsets. I think this is one of the better ones.

The picture was taken on 3 Piers Beach, Anna Maria Island, FL. The pier in the picture is the southern most pier for which the beach was named. It is really a beautiful spot and one I can’t wait to visit everytime I am in town.

Enjoy my favorite picture of my favorite beach!

Web 2.0

August 21, 2008

I never thought I would learn something about social media from an anthropolgy professor, but Dr. Wesch’s video has changed the way I look at PR and media in general.

This video really makes you look at what has been happening with social media in recent years. I took several years off between high school and college and so much is different now.  The fact that I can watch this video and other lectures of his shows the giant strides the internet has made. This video is the reason I started this blog, I figured it was time I learned how.

So welcome to my learning expierience, it should be fun…..

New Semester

August 20, 2008

The new semester started this week at Cameron University. I am not sure what exactly made me want to take 6 classes and a work shop. At least I get to take interesting classes, over the summer semester I took College Algebra – my brain still hurts. This fall I am taking Public Relations Strategies, Marketing, and News Writing (those are the fun ones).

I am also the President of our Public Relations Student Society and have spent the last few weeks working on recruitment and firming up the fall meeting schedule. We have some interesting guest speakers lined up, the first one is the Director of Marketing for a local casino. I can’t wait to hear what he has to say.
